Golf Courses
The Algarve is a famous golfing destination. Here are details of a selection of golf courses in the local area.
Penina
Four time host to Portuguese open. This course includes an 18 hole championship and 9 hole course. This is a parkland style course which will test any standard of golfer. Penina is 5 minutes drive and, although more expensive, is well worth the treat. Drive back towards the motorway then on the second roundabout head west towards Lagos.You will see Penina just off the N125. Even if you are not a golfer you can go to the Hotel to see the course and the top rated hotel.
Alto
This is another scenic parkland course with very tight holes which will test your accuracy off the tee to the limit. The course is reasonably priced and only 15 minutes drive from the apartment. Head towards Alvor and then follow the signs. It's just off the Alvor to Praia de Rocha road.
Palmares
A mixture of both parkland and links style holes. Once you go over the railway track the bottom holes are links in nature as they are next to the beach. As you pass back over the railway track you return to a parkland based golf course.
Over the 18 holes you will encounter some stunning views and it is worth taking a camera. Also recommended is visiting the course for lunch. You can sit on the terrace and admire the views over Lagos bay. The course is 15 minutes drive from the apartment. Head past Penina on N125 and turn left in Odiaxeire.
Pinto/Gramacho
These are two 18 hole courses on a lovely complex. Pinto is very much out in the country and is very scenic. The course is 20 minutes drive from the apartment. Again enjoy lunch looking out over the 18th of the Granacho course. Head back on the N125 towards Faro then follow signs right in Lagoa – the turn is towards Carvoeiro.
Boavista
This course was built only three years ago with stunning views overlooking the coast and the town of Lagos. This is a relatively open parkland course which is quite long and hilly but is suitable for any standard golfer and you can get a discount here becuase Oasis Parque is under the same management. You will need to take your leisure pass. The course is 20 minutes drive from the apartment. Head out of Lagos towards Sagres and Boavista is about 2km from Lagos on the left.
Morgado
This course is near Portimao. Buggies are mandatory. Take the N125 back towards Portimao then the road to Monchique. The turning is on the left. The course is 15 minutes drive from the apartment.
There are plenty more golf courses as you move back towards Faro. It really depends how far you want to travel. There are good courses around Vilamoura and Val do Lobo, but there are probably more expensive.
